Director’s Statement
“Recovery” is a short film about a Vietnamese American family that is estranged from one another. A grandson returns home to play a virtual reality simulation game with his mentally-ill grandma but he is confronted by his mother who dismisses him and his innovation. Unwilling to give up, he presents his virtual reality simulation to his grandma as they connect to their past and present in an unexpected share experience.
Currently, the world is polarized and divided politically, anti-Asian hate crime is on the rise in America, and the Covid-19 pandemic has left many of us physically and psychologically ill, quarantining at home and having to adapt to virtual technology for work, school, and communication. Recovery not only focus on a Vietnamese American family but the world as a whole that needs to reunite and reconcile through a new lens, “by healing others, we heal ourselves.”
